Romantic Restaurants

CABBAGES & CONDOMS | 10 Sukhumvit Soi 12 - Don't be put off by the restaurant's odd name and the array of contraceptive devices for sale. This popular place raises funds for the Population & Community Development Association, Thailand's family-planning program. The food here is Westernized but competently prepared; standouts are the deep-fried chicken wrapped in pandanus leaves, fried fish with mango sauce, and crispy duck salad. The eatery is comfortable and funky, with Christmas lights strung about, and it serves up good food for a good cause.

ORIENTAL HOTEL RIVERSIDE CAFE | Riverside - The Riverside Terrace has always been legendary and its most recent enhancements now make it a quintessential experience for guests who love a good Barbecue overlooking the majestic River of Kings. A most perfect location for dinner accompanied by the sights and sounds of the Chao Phraya River, the Barbecue Terrace has undergone an extensive renovation both in design and menu concept and assures an unparalleled dining experience accompanied by a live band every night. In addition to the classic favourites, other highlights include Lebanese mezze and Kebabs, Indian Tandoori Ovens, Japanese Teppanyaki, Sushi Counter, fresh bread station by order, and Open Fire Rotisserie, Tandoori, daily lamb and turkey shawarma, Tepan triple pork chops on the bone, steamed tiger shrimp, chargrilled BBQ lamb and blue river lobsters. The dessert station has also been enhanced for those with a sweet tooth to include a variety of fresh desserts including a flambe table with Crepe Suzette, Cherries Jubilee as well as peach and banana flambé.

Steakhouse Restaurants

PRIME | Charoennakom Road Millennium Hilton - Though it's just a toddler in restaurant years, this spot in the gleaming new Hilton Millennium has already attained the title of best steak house in Bangkok. It all begins with the groundbreaking interior architecture, which skillfully blends sweeping river and city views with the restaurant's open kitchen while still managing to feel intimate—an almost alchemical feat. Start with one of the signature martinis, and move on to the Caesar salad prepared tableside and perhaps a magnificent shellfish platter with fresh, briny oysters and lobster tails. Then there is the meat—whether it's Wagyu beef flown in from Australia or USDA Prime, no expense is spared in the kitchen (nor on the bill). The grilling is done over an extremely hot open flame. The wine list is also one of the best in the city, with lower than normal markups.

RIB ROOM & BAR | Landmark Hotel 138 Sukhumvit Road - Celebrity Chef McDang says he has nothing against Bangkok's other steakhouses, admitting that many are tough to compete with, but the Landmark's Rib Room is his favorite simply because they know how to cater to the Thai palate. "Thais like strong seasoning …we want to smell the brandy, taste the salt. At Rib Room, the steaks have a very stong pronounced taste sensation. They also cook it the way Thais like it." Billing itself as serving "probably" the best steaks in Bangkok, the Rib Room and Bar sits on the 31st floor of Bangkok's Landmark Hotel. In spite of the lack of conviction, the place does indeed know how to grill up a perfect piece of beef. Specialties include rib-eye steak on the bone, Matsusaka beef steak, the Australian grain-fed beef and the beef Wellington. Aside from the meat, Rib Room is the sexiest steakhouse in the city with its sleek design and great views of the Bangkok skyline. In the middle of the dimly lit dining room is a Ferrari-red open kitchen, heightening your cravings for that juicy rare slab of top quality beef. Rib Room also hosts regular wine dinners, allowing diners to plough through its best cuts of beef and fine wines without breaking the bank. Website

MADISON | Four Seasons Hotel 155 Rajdamri Road - The Four Seasons' Madison steakhouse isn't the kind of place you drop by when you've got a sudden craving for a rare piece of beef. A meal at this super chic high-society favorite is always a high-powered affair, an experience that needs to be savored. Several of our expert judges pointed out that this Manhatten style grill serves generous and incredibly flavorful portions of meat cooked to perfection accompanied by a variety of excellent sauces that compliment but don't over power the taste of the meat. The menu of Kobe, Wagyu, U.S., Matsuzaka and other imported beefs will leave you feeling ready to tackle the world, while the perfectly cooked lamb melts in your mouth. There's other tasty stuff for non-carnivores too but really, when a restaurant serves steak this good, who cares? Website

NEW YORK STEAKHOUSE | JW Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit Soi 4 - Of all of Bangkok’s steakhouses, the New York Steakhouse is the most iconic and the one that has long set the standard for the competition. The JW Marriott restaurant mimics its Manhattan namesakes in look, atmosphere and menu -- and sky-high prices. "Over the years many others -- both high-end hotels and independent grills -- have tried to top them, but the New York Steakhouse is tough to beat for a prime piece of meat," says Thai 101 publisher Mason Florence. It's difficult to recommend a particular cut as they're all just so damn good -- and massive. There's the 16-ounce Australian wagyu prime rib, the 16-ounce New York steak and all those expensive Japanese varieties steak lovers with deep pockets have come to expect in a high-market steakhouse. Not that you'll have room, but there's a pretty good fresh seafood selection too. Website

Thai Restaurants

PROVENCE CAFE | Peninsula Plaza, 153 Rajdamri Road - Family-owned Provence Cafe, inside Bangkok's Peninsula Plaza, has a huge menu of satisfying pasta, seafood and meat dishes. But it's the Thai noodle dishes that get local foodies salivating. When prime ministers and celebrities like TV host Chef McDang are coming to your restaurant specifically for your boat noodles, you know you're doing something right. The noodles are handmade onsite while all the ingredients are fresh, including the imported beef. But it's the perfectly seasoned broth that really makes this dish a Bangkok standout. In fact, the owner tells us that its regulars are so addicted to the chef's broth that they know right away if she's on holiday and someone else is working in the kitchen. Provence now has a branch in Gaysorn Plaza as well, but for the freshest noodles, McDang recommends sticking to the original, in Peninsula Plaza.

Italian Restaurants

ZANOTTI | Silom Saladaeng Colonade - Everything about this place is top-notch, from the attentive service to the extensive menu focusing on the regional cuisines of Piedmont and Tuscany. You can find anything from pizza and pasta to fish and steak, but the traditional osso buco served with gremolata and saffron risotto is recommended, though it's the priciest option on the menu. There's an unusually broad Italian wine list with selections by the bottle, glass, or carafe. The prix-fixe lunches are a bargain. The low ceilings and closely grouped tables give the place some intimacy, but the vibe is more lively than romantic, especially during the lunch and dinner rushes.

ENOTECA ITALIANO | 39 Sukhumvit Soi 27 - Review to follow

PALAZZO | 335 Thonglor Soi 17 - All of Davide Spighi’s pasta dishes are better than the Bangkok norm, but his linguine all'aragosta di scoglio is a thing of magnificence, pungent with garlic and chunks of perfectly cooked rock lobster," says food critic Footman. The homemade pasta is cooked to al dente perfection, a feature of all of Chef Spighi's dishes. And even though palazzo is Italian for "palace," this ambassador-house-turned-restaurant serves home-style Italian fare in a warm, easygoing atmosphere. Diners can be overwhelmed by choice -- there are up to 100 Italian favorites here, from antipasto to pizza.

Japanese Restaurants

HAKATA | 4 Sukhumvit Soi 39 - Although there are many good Japanese restaurants in the Sukhumvit area near the Emporium shopping center, Hakata is a step above most. The main dining area and sushi bar are spacious and relaxing, and there are private rooms available as well. Sushi prices run a little high, but the regular dishes like tempura and katsu-don (fried pork strips) are reasonably priced and tasty.

TEN SUI | 33 Sukhumvit Soi 16 - In a city filled with Japanese expats, it’s easy to find fresh sashimi and sushi. Ten-sui, however, is special. Though a variety of authentic Japanese dishes are on the menu, including some incredible beef items, the sushi bar is the real star of Ten-Sui. It features fresh fish flown in weekly from Japan. “Perfectly selected and prepared sushi and sashimi, from the familiar to the distinctly challenging," says author and food critic Tim Footman. "Anyone for whale bacon?" Though it's set in a renovated Thai house, everything about this place has that old Nippon feel, from the Japanese garden to the traditional open kitchen and kimono-rocking servers. "The setting and service are as authentic as anywhere in Bangkok,” but the food quality was not as good as expected for the price we paid. Tripadvisor Reviews

ISAO | 5 Sukhumvit Soi 31 - Bangkok suffers no shortage of excellent sushi bars, but Isao is the place to find sublime fusion sushi with a Western flair. "Having spent 12 years living in Japan, I can say that Isao tops the list of great sushi joints in Bangkok," says Bangkok 101 publisher Mason Florence. "Isao is not afraid of utilizing unconventional ingredients like cream cheese. Try the sushi sandwich!" Purists shouldn't let this "Americanized sushi" scare them off. Other popular dishes include the "Volcano," a large scallop on the half shell served with a rich, thick sauce. The “Chicago Spicy Crazy,” meanwhile, has salmon, tuna, white fish and various vegetables. The Philly rolls, as tradition dictates, are made with salmon, cucumbers and cream cheese. Website

MARU | 95/5-6 Thong Lor Soi 3, Sukhumvit Soi 55 - Chef Ian Kittichai calls unassuming Maru his top pick for "very good custom sushi." Best Eats judge Chef McDang agrees, noting that while there are many great Japanese restaurants in Bangkok, "this one is very personal. Nice and quiet, tucked away, very friendly." "It's all done traditionally with Japanese style, as the owner is Japanese," says McDang. "He knows that I like things that are unusual and that I have to have an education in the culinary arts of the Japanese culture. 'What do you have, why do you use these ingredients?' He will educate you." Located in the Japanese enclave of Thong Lor, where Japanese restaurants outnumber Thai restaurants, the 12-year-old Maru is where Japanese executives dine without worrying about the cost. “So bloody expensive I have to go dutch,” laughs McDang. "But it's worth it; really fresh and inventive. Everything about eating Japanese at Maru is an experience. My palate gets to taste very different things every time I go." Website

NOBU | 414 Sukhumvit Soi 55 - Under review  Website

MUGENDAI | Thonglor Soi 12 - Thailand had been lacking specialized Japanese restaurants, with most often lumping their food preparation methods into one bundle. But Mugendai does only tempura and sushi, all made with fresh fish caught and delivered from Japan’s famed Tsukiji market. Which, as might be expected, comes with a price. The menu changes daily, depending on the catch of the day. The sushi stresses the importance of fresh, grade-A ingredients, and the tempura is made according to traditional Japanese tempura house methods. Try the Uni Hotate Tempura (sea urchin roe with scallops, 700 THB) and Aburi 7 (2,200 THB) -- a series of nigiri which included masazaka gyu beef (tender, barley fed beef) and otoru (blue fin tuna). This is the place to go when you want to splurge. Expect to pay 6,000 THB  for two without drinks (on the upside, there is no corkage fee so you can bring your wine in). In the heart of Thong Lor, on a rooftop overlooking the city, the vibe doesn’t get any better. The restaurant is small and cozy, furnished  with wooden tables and chairs.

ZUMA | St. Regis, 159 Rajadamri Road - An informal izakaya in fancy surroundings. With highly-acclaimed branches in London, Hong Kong, Istanbul and Miami, the local "see and be seen" crowd couldn't wait to dig their chopsticks into the contemporary Japanese dishes served up at  Zuma's recently-opened Bangkok restaurant, which can be accessed through the posh St. Regis Hotel. Zuma is the kind of place you take someone you want to impress as the food definitely lives up to the hype. Just don't leave home without your platinum credit card. Menu highlights include the melt-in-your-mouth Wagyu sirloin with Wafu sauce and garlic crisp, miso-marinated black cod wrapped in hoba leaf and a wide selection of fresh off the boat sashimi. The problem is, Zuma is an izakaya-style restaurant, which means you're expected to share. With dishes as delicious as these, you're not going to want to. Like all five of the other Zuma restaurants, the Bangkok venue was designed by famed interior designer Noriyoshi Muramatsu and features both local and Japanese influences. The stone and wood work is remarkable, while the seating is comfortable yet sophisticated. For those who prefer the great outdoors but not the heat there's an air-conditioned patio.

Korean Restaurants

DOO RAE | 212/15 Sukhumvit, Soi 12 - While there are many authentic Korean restaurants in the Sukhumvit Plaza, this barbecue joint is one of the best. Even though there are three stories of tables, there's often a wait, even at 9 pm on a weeknight. Table barbecue—you cook the meat yourself over a grill at your table—featuring hearty bulgogi (thin slices of beef in a tasty marinade) is a good way to go, as are the substantial tofu stews. Drinks include a larger selection of sake and soju (a rice-based Korean drink similar to vodka, but with a lower alcohol content) than you'll find elsewhere in the city.

Chinese Restaurants

JADE GARDEN | 54 Surawong Silom - You won't find a better dim sum brunch than the one at Jade Garden. The decor is more understated than at many expensive Chinese restaurants, with a remarkable wood-beam ceiling and softly lighted Chinese-print screens. Private dining rooms are available with advance notice. Two good dinner specials are fried Hong Kong noodles and pressed duck with tea leaves. Look for the monthly "special promotion" dish featuring seasonal ingredients.

GREAT SHANGHAI | 648 Sukhumvit Road Soi 24 - The Great Shanghai has bland décor and dicey service, but the Peking Duck is pure bliss, says Bangkok 101 publisher Mason Florence. "Succulent meat and crispy skin." The staff take great pains to make sure there isn't a spot of fat left on the skin when it hits your plate, expertly de-fatting it at your table. Accompanying the duck slices are thin, non-sticky but soft and moist pancakes and what just might be Thailand's best Peking duck sauce -- homemade hoisin with the perfect balance of sweetness and saltiness. The huge restaurant features authentic Cantonese cuisine, but the Peking duck is what everyone comes for.

Seafood Restaurants

THE SEAFOOD BAR | Sukhumvit Soi 16 - Imported Seafood from Europe, USA and Canda. Large selection of fresh Oysters, Wild Salmon, Maine Lobster, Alaska King Crab, Dungeness Crab. Small but carefully selected wine list starting at 1200 THB. The Seafood Bar is a bigger version of his first baby, featuring even more fresh seafood from around the world. "The Seafood Bar is a perfect Western-style alternative in Bangkok for utterly fresh seafood and shellfish, both raw and cooked," says Best Eats judge Florence. "Billy Marinelli has been importing fresh seafood to Asia for over 20 years, and now has a shopfront at the Seafood Bar to showcase his products. Don’t miss their tasting tiers." Expert panelist Footman has his own advice: “Marinelli’s latest venture offers delicious grilled and pasta options, but your best bet is to plow through the seafood platter, which is groaning with the best oysters, crab, clams and anything else that looks good off the boats. The Sunday all-you-can-eat lunch is especially good value.” The Seafood Bar has won the hearts of expats from the U.S. East Coast, as it serves delicious Atlantic offerings such as live Maine lobster and creamy New England clam chowder. Unlike many high-end restaurants in Bangkok, The Seafood Bar doesn't drown the flavors of its seafood with unnecessary sauces or peculiar combinations. Dishes are kept blessedly simple. Website

SNAPPER | 1/22 Sukhumvit Soi 11 - A real deal fish-and-chips shack from New Zealand. Claiming to be Bangkok's first New Zealand restaurant, Snapper is primarily a fish-and-chips shack that dishes out freshly caught seafood. It’s no fuss, no muss menu makes it clear: if you go to Snapper, you’re going for fresh seafood imported from New Zealand. It’s a little more expensive than your average fish-and-chips shack, but the quality, great service and a friendly host make up for it. Snapper, only a stumble away from Cheap Charlie's, is furnished with tables and chairs made from the wooden planks of a lakeside dock, with a fishing net draped overhead. It feels like you’re dining by the sea. The seating, however, could be improved upon.

Sunday Brunch

LIVING ROOM | Jazz Brunch at the Sheraton Grande 250 Sukhumvit Road - No, you haven’t arrived at the wrong floor. The Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit’s Living Room is essentially a hotel lobby. But it's not only one of Bangkok’s best venues for live jazz. It's also home to one of the city's top brunches. On Sundays from 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. the Living Room hosts a fantastic buffet brunch with a live jazz soundtrack. "The Jazzy Brunch at The Living Room in the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit Hotel earns top marks for its amazing spread of delicacies in an atmosphere of cool live jazz," says Thai 101 publisher Mason Florence and one of our expert panelists. "Perfect for lounging around on a lazy Sunday." Offerings include French oysters, Alaskan crab, fresh seafood, sushi, Indian curries, Thai dishes, traditional roast beef and a diverse selection of desserts and ice creams. LORD JIMS | Oriental Hotel 48 Oriental Avenue - There is a certain prestige that comes with boasting, “I'm headed to Lord Jim’s for brunch.” As soon as you go through the doors you're met by a grand entryway with a long aquarium that sets the mood for the underwater experience you shall receive. The life of the sea is prepared and presented in all its delicious glory at this riverside hotel restaurant, which serves an incredible buffet lunch every day of the week, though on Sundays they up the ante with additional delicacies that aren't laid out during the week. "For buffet style brunch, Lord Jim’s at the Oriental Hotel cannot be beat," says chef Ian. Officially, the Mandarin Oriental doesn't refer to it as Sunday brunch. It's just lunch. But it's an institution and if you are in search of that rare New England lobster, Dover sole or some oysters, you'll receive the best here. Though the seafood is the real star, everything else is fantastic. There's also a great selection of delicious roast meats, Chinese dishes, Thai, pan-fried fois gras, salads and an incredible dessert spread that includes a chocolate fountain. FOUR SEASONS HOTEL | 455 Rajadamri Road - It took a while for the concept of Sunday buffet brunch to catch on in Bangkok, simply because “Thais eat mini meals," says Chef McDang. "Brunch is a very Western concept." But caught on it has, with the Four Seasons edging out some stiff competition to top our list of Best Brunches. As business owner and Best Eats judge Suki points out, the table service and pure selection gives it the advantage. You don't have to line up and wait for the chefs to prepare your dishes. Simply leave a card with your table number on it and they'll bring it to you when it's ready. Just be sure to pace yourself. The granddaddy of Bangkok brunches, the Four Seasons lays out dozens of serving tables that groan beneath the weight of fresh Sydney rock oysters, lobster, Indian, pasta, Middle Eastern kebabs, lamb chops, steak, veal, roast duck, cheeses, sushi and caviar. And because Sunday calories don't count, the dessert table includes tiramisu and peach creme brulee. Even for a five-star hotel, this brunch is extravagant. Wash it all down with champagne or mimosas and your Sunday afternoon just got a whole lot more interesting. Website

GASTRO 1/6 | Sukhumvit 22 Soi Namthip 2 - An artsy outdoor brunch joint featuring an all-female staff in the courtyard of RMA institute, this joint closes mid afternoon, marking a nice contrast with most of the new start-ups this year. Most importantly, it serves arguably the best breakfast in the city. All the classics are there, including a full English breakfast with sausages, two eggs any style and baguette, for 380 baht. Chef Su's French toast with seasonal fruits, berries and syrup is a Gastro classic (195 baht). The menu is limited, but every choice you make will be the right choice. Gastro 1/6 makes diners feel like they're eating in a secret garden. The outdoor courtyard is shaded by trees. There’s a swinging chair where you can sip espresso, but otherwise seating is scarce and so is the staff. If you’re planning on having a lazy Sunday brunch, make sure you come early because this place gets packed. 

French Restaurants

D'SENS | Dusit Thani Hotel 946 Rama IV Road - D’Sens is the brainchild of the Michelin-starred Pourcel brothers from southern France, who modeled it on their two-Michelin-star awarded Le Jardin des Sens restaurant in Montpellier. Their love of southern French flavors and an obsession with seafood and game has resulted in authentic yet unique dishes such as pan-fried cod fish, oxtail beef and duck liver, lentil stew and mushroom emulsion. To try a varied selection of dishes, our judges recommend D'Sens' ever-changing multi-course Discovery menu, which offers several options like sole filet with pistachio Butter, oyster ravioli and carrot reduction and crispy mille feuilles with lemon cream, caramel sauce, lemon sherbet for dessert. In addition to fine food, the view from D’Sens, located on the 22nd floor of the Dusit Thani hotel, is amazing if not deceptive, presenting Bangkok as a quiet, clean and organized city.

LE NORMANDY | Oriental Hotel Soi Oriental - Bangkok's Mandarin Oriental is known for its commitment to perfection in all areas, and that includes French food at its super luxurious Le Normandie restaurant, says our CNNGo Best Eats expert, businesswoman Yuki Srikanchana. Le Normandie's world-class cuisine is created by executive chef Carlos Gaudencio, who came from Paris' legendary Le Grand Vefour restaurant in 2005. Set menus take away some of the pain of having to choose from the many offerings, such as the incredible Degustation Menu which features a huge offering of dishes, from pan-fried foie gras with Tahiti vanilla and apple foam to roast rack of lamb and sweet bread served with salsify and Jerusalem artichoke ravioli. Le Normandie's seasonal wine dinners are also famous, pairing the restaurant's cuisine with selections from its huge wine selection -- which just happens to be Thailand's best. Complemented by a stunning view of Chao Phraya River, this is easily Bangkok's most sophisticated dining experience, down to the elegant decor and impeccable service. Website

LE BEAULIEU | Sofitel Residence Sukhumvit Soi 19 - Just might be one of the best restaurants in the world hosted in a serviced apartment complex. The nondescript location makes its brilliant haute French cuisine seem all the more remarkable as you have to be good to survive in this location. Chef Herve Frerard, established as one of Bangkok’s best chefs, pulls it off with his flavorful soups, sauces and desserts. “The food is done with a heart. It’s not stylized," says our expert Chef McDang. "Everything is about this place is fine. The service is great and the food is very rich." These include seasonal imported grouse and quail, which McDang says are done incredibly well. Best Eats judge and Thai 101 publisher Mason Florence has his own favorite dish. "The Maine Lobster baked and slow cooked in vanilla butter sauce and served with artichoke puree and Brussels sprout condiments at Le Beaulieu is a show stopper," he says With ingredients sourced from the Thai king’s royal projects and around the world, a Frerard dish is always fresh and elegantly balanced "Herve Frerard’s cuisine lets the finest ingredients -- not necessarily the most ostentatious -- do the talking," says food writer and Best Eats judge Tim Footman. "Bouillabaisse, sole meunière, roast poussin, slow roast lamb, rum baba … Watch and learn, but above all, enjoy." Website

SALT | 112/2 Soi Ari Phaholyothin Soi 7 - A hipster heaven. Two favorite cuisines- Japanese and French - mingle mellifluously in this hip spot in the hippest area in Bangkok - Ari. While Salt’s massive menu doesn’t have any descriptions, whatever you choose is going to be pretty good. Recommended is the Wagyu beef pizza from the seasonal menu. It's 280 baht for a small, 400 baht for a large. It could very well be some of the best pizza in town. Salt has a lot of space. At the entrance, a large room with bay windows showcases the action -- a bar, a DJ and a seating area that's packed as often as not. Outside is a more relaxed down-tempo courtyard. Around the corner, you can dine on the lawn next to the wood-fire pizza oven.

OSCARS | 24 Sulhumvit Soi 11 - Combine former Dusit Thani D'Sens' star chef Julien Lavigne and Bangkok-bred mixologist Surasak Pantaisong, voted Thailand's Best Bartender in 2008, you get Oskar Bistro. The four Frenchmen who started this new Bangkok hot spot aimed to provide an uncomplicated menu done right in a fun, clubby atmosphere. But that doesn't mean Julien is holding back on the skills that earned him his five-star status. He's dishing out classy renditions of classic plates in an upbeat, modern-chic setting that won't break your budget.  If you're just snacking, pair up an extra juicy and perfectly tender chicken skewer with yellow curry dip (150 THB) with a Golden Thai cocktail (195 THB). The red chili in the Golden Thai gives the cocktail a subtle spiciness that complements the already succulent chicken - and the coconut base of each marry the dish and drink even more. Website

IRON FAIRES | 394 Thonglor Road, Sukhumvit Soi 55 - "Iron Fairies on Thong Lor pretty much does only gourmet burgers, and they are juicy, crafted from top-grade Aussie beef," says our Best Eats panelist and Thai 101 publisher Mason Florence. The menu is pretty much devoted to burgers and they're all fantastic, from the fish burger to the tropical burger with its thick slice of pineapple and a fried egg. "It’s not just the burgers, but the utterly unique industrial art décor and live jazz music that gives this tiny place its magic and what we at Bangkok 101 reckon is the coolest bar in the city." With its spiral staircase that leads to nowhere, shelves of 'fairy dust' jars filled with cookies and bar tables converted out of rusty barrels, you’re in for a peculiar ride. The owner, Ashley Sutton, is a friendly Aussie author-slash-blacksmith who creates metallic ethereal creatures based on his famous children books about fairies and their adventures. Though the menu here isn’t as enormous as their fantastic burgers, the food is well done, making it a great and friendly stop on this rather busy and otherwise pretentious street.

GREENHOUSE CAFE | The Landmark Hotel 138 Sukhumvit Road - “I go to this Landmark coffee shop quite often, as they have very good congee and Hong Kong noodles. One Sunday I took my mom there for lunch and everyone was having Thai and Chinese hot pots of rice with Chinese olives and ground pork, etc," he says. "But I turned around and saw on the table next to me a huge plate with a massive burger. Bacon, cheese, sunny-side egg on top. From then on when I thought about where to have a burger this image would appear in my head." There is more than just incredible beef burgers -- with other burgers including the odd looking tuna burger, shown in the above photo. Located on the ground floor of the Landmark Hotel, Greenhouse Café is a good place to escape the craze of Nana sidewalks, mad with street vendors and short-skirted working girls. The place itself is not much to look at -- it’s just your typical hotel coffeehouse with standard décor and subtle background music. This round-the-clock café is also well loved by Bangkok’s party animals who drop by during the wee hours to soak up some of its smooth porridge before tottering home.

HYDE & SEEK'S | 65/01 Athenee Residence Soi Ruamrudee Wireless Road - Yankee Burger' is made with Wagyu beef and a fresh baked bun," says our Best Eats expert Chef Ian of his favorite city burger. It wins the top prize for managing to turn this U.S. classic into a gourmet feast. Made of 6oz of beef and topped with Roquefort cheese, caramelized shallots and paired with a bucket of shoestring fries, burgers in Bangkok don't get fancier than this. Diners even get a knife to aid in their enjoyment. But it isn't a case of style over substance. This massive burger is as all great burgers should be -- juicy and satisfying with just the right amount of grease. As a testament to Hyde & Seek's commitment to burger excellency, the dimly lit gastro bar also has a special Burger Tuesday night featuring 10 different burgers and, best of all, 99 baht beers.

BANGKOK BURGER CO | Opus Building, Thong Lor Soi 10 -  Everyone knows burgers. So if you’re going to open up a restaurant, you'd better make sure your burger is right. Some people love Bangkok Burger Company. Some people are disappointed. But everybody is talking about it. It’s American, Aussie, French and British. The restaurant shack crosses borders. They use Charolais beef, which is popular in all of the listed countries. The patty is juicy and tender. The menu is simple, with choices ranging from the classic bacon cheeseburger (230 THB for a small, 295 THB for a large) to more eccentric selections, like The Emperor (a burger cooked in teriyaki sauce with sautéed onions, mushrooms and wasabi mayo. Small 230 THB, large 295 THB) Atmosphere: Red booths in this small, Thong Lor restaurant are reminiscent of a classic diner. The decor feels very "America." But when you’re getting ready to chomp down on a burger, that's a good way to feel.

BED SUPPERCLUB | 26 Sukhumvit Road Soi 11 - After nearly a decade in Bangkok, Bed Supperclub has yet to cede its status as one of the city’s top dining and drinking venues. But the swarms of stylish clubbers who flock to Bed Supperclub for its skilled DJs might not be aware that this popular nightclub doubles as one of the city's top gourmet restaurants. "Located in the Sukhumvit area, Bed Supperclub takes the cake for creative pre-fixe menus, especially their surprise weekend menus," says Thai 101 publisher Mason Florence. Award-winning U.S. chef Dan Ivarie's unique dishes are a blend of modern Asian flavors and overseas influences, including Italian, French, Thai and U.S. cuisine. We're talking super-innovative dishes like Belgium endive and smoked salmon with pink ginger-guava vinaigrette, or Tasmanian beef rib-eye with sesame-garlic glaze and kim chee salad. Menus change monthly and the three-course meals are served from Sunday to Thursday. On Friday and Saturday, Bed Supperclub presents its "special surprise" four-course menu. Much of the surprise comes in the form of entertainment. One weekend you'll get singers and dances, the next interactive performers. EAT ME | Soi Piphat 2 - One of Bangkok’s most original kitchens, Eat Me dares to be different and succeeds. Where else can you find zucchini carpaccio, beetroot soup, tea smoked organic pork or beef cheek tagine? "For over 10 years Eat Me has been reinventing creative, Pacific Rim-inspired dishes at perhaps Bangkok’s first art gallery-restaurant," says Best Eats judge Mason Florence. "Casual yet sophisticated, it’s also one of the few gourmet kitchens offering late night dining nightly." With outdoor and indoor seating, respected exhibitions put on in conjunction with H Gallery and a loyal crowd of artists, Thai and expat patrons, the only thing that isn’t sophisticated about Eat Me is its name.

SIROCCO | Lebua State Tower 1055 Silom Road - If one Bangkok restaurant has managed to make a name for itself on the global stage, it's Sirocco. The restaurant has been featured in pretty much every travel magazine worth its glossy paper, and has won numerous readers' choice awards. The food on this 63rd-floor restaurant atop Lebua hotel in the State Tower is often overshadowed by the venue's famous views. Those views also add to the price tag, making Sirocco one of Bangkok's most expensive dining experiences. It's worth it. The Mediterranean cuisine is fresh and authentic. Some of our expert panel's favorite dishes include Mediterranean octopus a la plancha with potato confit, smoked paprika and piquillo pepper essence; oven-roasted Chilean sea bass with vine-ripe tomato "Pain Perdu,” saffron potatoes and Manila clam velouté; and Wagyu beef tenderloin persillade "La Ratte" with potato puree, glazed seasonal vegetables and oxtail jus.
