Bangkok - The Top 10 Wine Bars - Explore Bangkok's Wine Culture

► Wine Bars

OPUS | 64 Thanon Pan, Silom - The newest establishment on the list, Opus is a stylish but relaxed place, mid-way between Silom and Sathorn, where top-notch cuisine is complemented by a walk-in cellar of 300 mostly Italian bottles, plus a few champagnes. Owner Alex Morabito is always on hand to suggest the most elegant match; maybe consider a Greco di Tufo, from Avellino. Website

ENOTECA ITALIANO | 39 Sukhumvit, Soi 27 - A laidback establishment, a little hard to find, where the menu of Italian classic food is something of a backdrop to the wine. Owner Nicola Bonazza is happy to guide newcomers through the excellent 300-label list. “People often start with Sicilian wines,” he says, “because they’re the most similar to New World styles. But if you want something distinctively Italian, we have some really special Piedmont wines.”

WINE LOFT | 24 Sukhumvit, Soi 31 - The Wine Loft is mainly a retail operation, but its outlets (in Sukhumvit 31 and Thonglor, with a new branch opening soon in Langsuan) also offer seating from which guests can enjoy a civilized glass, often to the accompaniment of a DJ or live jazz. “Prosecco’s always popular,” says brand manager Nisakorn Sihanatkathakul, “and customers also like fruity Napa Valley styles. But we organise tastings where they can try something new.” Current recommendation: Frescobaldi Nipozzano 2006, with 91 points from Wine Spectator. Cigar Lounge ! Website

TAPAS CAFE | 25 Sukhumvit, Soi 11 - Unlike some of the other recommendations, Tapas Café doesn’t boast a vast list of wines; you can choose from about 40 bottles, with very few of them taking you over the 2,000 baht mark. But they’re an impressive 40, chosen to match the addictively good snacks and nibbles that give the place its name. Try a gutsy Rioja, or a Galician white -- especially good with seafood. Owner Guy Jackson has another place, Spanish on 4, on Silom, and it’s just as good. Website

WINE CONNECTION | Sukhumvit, Soi 26 K Village - If you can get a table here, lucky you. This is the hottest spot to come and quaff a glass or two while enjoying their platters of cold cuts. Part wine shop part restaurant there’s a good range by the glass or bottle at very reasonable prices. Website

OPERA | Sukhumvit Road, Soi 39 - The highlights in the selection includes quality wines such as Termenthia, Numanthia, Amancio, Aaltos PS, Vega Sicilia. Gaja Barolos, Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Tignanello. Chateau Cru's from France and Champagne from many leading houses. Cava & Proseccos are available. Top Food !! Website

WINE I LOVE YOU | CDC Design Centre, Building E Ekami-Ramintra Road - Wine displays highlight the entrance and also function as the selection method for customers. There is no printed wine list. Customers make their selections from the bottles displayed on the shelves- arranged by region. All the major wine regions are represented- from vintage Bordeauxs to New World wines from Australia, California, Chile and South Africa. The prices range from house wines to the high end Bordeauxs- with the largest selection in the “mid-price” category. Website

CATALANA WINE BAR | Sukhumvit Soi 11 - More a sleek wine bar than a tapas restaurant, the owners at Bangkok's newest Spanish joint have put a lot of focus on creating an extensive wine list that reaches both hemispheres. There are also perfect gourmet sangrias, sheesha (apple and mint flavor, 400 baht) and cigars (ranging from 115 THB for mini cigars to 2,845 THB for a Cuban Cohiba). Catalana's modern-chic, luxurious decor gives it a more polished and refined feel than the more relaxed Tapas Cafe on the same soi. Website
